Cultural differences often determine what happens to a family dynamic once the elders in the family are no longer capable of independent self care. In some cultures there is no question about what will happen. Mom or dad will come to live with the eldest adult child who will then take care of them for the remainder of their lives. In other cultures, the decision is not always so simple. Unfortunately, life tends to get in the way of what we want to do and what we are actually able to accomplish.
Most people would love to be able to care for their ailing mother or father, but that is not always the best solution. If the elderly parent is in the position where they need regularly dosed medications, IV changes, catheter cleanings or other types of nursing care then perhaps home care is not the best resolution. Unless the adult child has medical training, this can quickly become overwhelming. In this type of circumstance, the family should look into nursing homes.
The family can be assured that their loved one is in a safe environment where their needs will be met. Healthful food is served three times a day with the option of eating in a dining area with other residents or with a friend in their room. There are exercise classes that cater to seniors and even those who are not capable of a regular workout. Various educational classes also take place in topics that are of interest to both men and women.
This type of environment is a place where your loved one will be happy and you will know that they are well taken care of. A person should never have feelings of sorrow or guilt for making the decision that is best for their loved one. Utilizing the services of a nursing home is the right choice for some families.
